Is there an additive to instantly thicken sauces or gravy or is it hit and miss with adding flour?

I’ve always heard that corn flour is good at thickening sauces, not sure if that is the flour you are talking about?
yeah my food tech teacther said that corn flour is very good for thickening better than normal flour
you can either use corn flour, finely chopped potatoes or if you mix plain flour and water not too much though as it will change the colour of your gravy. Only use one of the methods of cooking dependant on what you have in the cupboard.
