Flapjack Recipe

They last for days, they are cheap to make and they are good for you. What could be better than a great flapjack for that lunchtime snack!

Ingredients

Brown Sugar – 80g
Butter – 40g
Margarine – 60g
Oats – 250g
Salt – pinch
Banana – 1
Honey – 3tbsp
chocolate (optional)

Method

1. Melt the butter and the Margarine in a deep saucepan over a very low heat
2. add the brown sugar and 3 tablespoons of honey and mix well until you have a liquid substance.
3. Mix in the oats, if you find it easier add them in gradually stirring and covering the oats with the mixture
4. add a pinch of salt.
5. Mash the banana into a liquid pulp and mix into the oats (this will take a good few minutes to ensure that the banana is fully mixed in).
6. Get a knife and spread the oats evenly over a baking tray.
7. Place the baking tray onto the middle shelf in a preheated oven (gas mark 5, 220 C) and bake for 15 minutes, checking the progress regularly. Take out when the mixture starts turning a darker colour.
8. Stand for a minute or two, cut the flapjack into as many pieces as you wish
9. You may find it best to leave the flapjack for a few hours to cool down although you can eat them striaight away.

Tip. To make the flapjacks that little bit more special, drizzle melted chocolate over the top of them!

I hadn’t got any golden syrup in the cupboard so was pleased to find a receipe that used honey instead. Hopefully these will go down well with my son & his freinds out busy playing in the snow (yes, SNOW! In ENGLAND! In APRIL! :D

Just made this with my little one and have to say, couldn’t wait for it to cool down because the smell was just too nice!!! Just had a bit with a lovely cup of coffee and it was luuuuuuuuuuusssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh! Definately using this one again! (put some mixed fruit with mine and its gorgeous)!

This sounds like a fab recipe and I’m going to try it tomorrow with some of the suggestions that have been posted here, mixed fruit and cinnamon sound like yummy ideas. Also nice to see quite a few men posting their comments too – goes to show not all men are macho dummies.

Could you use Golden Syrup instead of the honey? I have the syrup but no honey so would it still work? Maybe i should try it anyway…

I have tried a couple of recipes for flapjacks and I’m wondering… are they supposed to be so flat? What size pan should you use for this recipe? And I’m getting confused with the conversions… my “conversion” seems very runny.

I just made the first batch of flap jacks and true to my own form, practically ignored the recipe altogether. I had no Honey or golden syrup, so I used marmalade, I didn’t have enough oats so I used muesli which was really rich in nuts and fruit. I added some chopped peanuts for added crunch… the nuts were salted so I didn’t bother with adding salt, and the result: Crumbly luxurious flapjacks. I’ve only sampled the hot version yet…. I guess I have to wait a while before I know what the finished result will be. OH… AND, I made a double recipe and pushed it into one baking tray which made for particularly deep and seemingly more luxurious flapjacks. (No bananas in either… contemplating going to do a shop to try the original recipe now… sounds great).

does anyone know the amount of calories that are in one slice of these flapjacks?

  9. David says:

These taste great and are easy to make. However, as far as them being healthy, I would have to disagree. Before working out the nutritional information, its obvious from the ingredients that they are not healthy. When thinking of something made up of sugar, butter, marg, honey and chocolate, the word healthy does not come to mind. Yes there are porridge oats and banana, but that is the only healthy part. If you split these up into 12 – 15 pieces as suggested, they are bite size. A mars bar has half the calories as one of these. Just something to think about for anyone planning on using these as past of a diet.

wow i love flapjackes these ones are the best

  11. heather says:

I left out the honey and banana and they still tasted great, but they are definately NOT healthy and shouldnt be eaten daily, but unfortunately everything that tastes good tends to be bad for you, such is life.

  15. Tasha says:

I love flapjacks and didn’t realise until recently (being quite a tradgedy in the kitchen) just how easy they were, until i looked for a way of using some oats that were bought by mistake. I am rubbish at remembering recipes (which is how i ended up here looking it up AGAIN) so i have to say THANK YOU to the person who said “I’ll just remember 250 100 100″!!! I had never thought of it that way before! Also for someone like me, who has a big family but a bit lacking in the kitchen this recipe is great as the flapjacks are almost impossible to burn. I forgot about mine and ran into the kitchen after half an hour but they still taste great! :)
As a tip to others if you do ever have a flapjack recipe go wrong the cruble makes a great dessert with ice cream or custard! Or even if it doesn’t! I threw some raisins and chopped dried apricots in too.

  16. adam says:

I use these to make a protein flapjack, replace the 250g oats with 1/4 whey 3/4 oats, use Flora Light (unless someone can recommend a lower fat substitute, I’ve not researched this properly) for both the margarine/butter parts. Also replace all the sugar with honey and sultanas/raisins for a slightly lower GI carb = less conversion to fat in the body if you’re slightly active.

  17. Roz says:

I had to search flapjacks for my homework, i tomorro for food tech i’m gonna make the apple and cranberry one but i’m going to use flora light and add tiny bits of choped apple and some raisons.:-)
